I had a good spell in Western Europe during June. Here's the results from the German portion of that trip.

I keep going back to Belgium, mainly for the beer, but I take a lot of photos too.

The Battlefield Line, Loughborough (MR), etc.

The railways of this small country.

The narrow and miniature lines in Norfolk, plus the standard gauge stuff at Bressingham.

The GCR (North) and the main line from Loughborough to Leicester.

A preserved historic industrial railway in Yorkshire.

I managed to traverse this line in BR days, then saw it derelict and now it's back to life as the miniature Kirklees Light Railway.

The preserved Nene Valley Railway, running from Peterborough to Yarwell Junction, plus the miniature railway at Ferry Meadows.

I've only touched the surface of this scenic country, but Tony Martens & Ron Parkin have given me some pictures from earlier years.

The H&BR ran from Hull to Cudworth, with branches to Denaby and Wath. I managed to photograph some of it before it was finally removed. More pictures to come soon.

Situated in the outskirts of Mulhouse, this establishment is well worth a visit. Captions & full details to follow ASAP.

September 2007 saw me back in Switzerland for 10 days or so. Here is a good load of the pictures, with a vast amount more to come soon (see part 5). There's some older stuff too.

Selby, once on the East Coast Main Line, was served by lines from Leeds, Hull, Market Weighton, Goole, York, Doncaster & Cawood. Also included here is the Selby Diversion.

One of the longest preserved lines in England. They need your money at the moment, please make use of the link below.

Another collection to fill in the gaps. Includes places like Bolton & Bury. Also the museum at Liverpool Road station, Manchester.

Liverpool Street to Marks Tey, including the branches to Southend Victoria, Southminster and Braintree.

A lovely preserved line running from Bodiam to Tenterden (at present).

The fifteen inch gauge tourist railway connecting Hythe with New Romney and Dungeness.

Llanelli to Craven Arms via Llandeilo. A fantastically scenic route.

I've been here several times & completed most of the passenger network, so there'll be a lot of pics to come. My thanks to Jim Sambrooks for the two Luas photos in 2007.

Another country I visit on a regular basis, with my first visit being in 1971.

I first visited this fine country in 1971 & have been back many times since, the latest being early March 2008.

The Great Western Main Line between London & Reading (both these locations have their own collections), plus the various branches.

To complete the network of lines in the South East corner of England, we take a tour over the present Oxted lines to Uckfield and East Grinstead, plus the closed and preserved ones in the area. Includes the Bluebell Railway.

Formerly a joint line owned by the GCR & GNR, this is now the main line between Doncaster and Wakefield Westgate, with the branch to Stainforth, avoiding Doncaster.

.........and now for something completely different. The narrow gauge line that served the Peat Moors near Thorne, South Yorkshire.

Lots of photos of railways, tramways and monorails in Germany, mainly from the camera of Ron Parkin, though the older stuff is my own. Watch out for a lot more soon, as I'm off to Germany for two weeks.

Up from Derby, through Chesterfield to Sheffield, plus the former through line towards Manchester via Bakewell, various branches and the Hope Valley Line. Also included is the line via Toton.

The ex NER route from Leeds to York, via Harrogate, with some traditional signalling.

Up the Valleys to places like Ebbw Vale, Aberdare, Treherbert, etc. Also includes the Brecon Mountain Railway, just north of Merthyr Tydfil.

The railways of Fife, Grampian and Tayside, plus the Highland Main Line south of Inverness.

The county of Merseyside is a creation of the politics of the '60s and '70s, but forms a convenient boundary for this collection. In a couple of cases, we slip over the border into Lancashire & Cheshire.

Former GWR lines in Exeter & South Devon, including the preserved lines.

A collection that fills a few gaps between others on this site.

The mining town of Barnsley was served by a number of railways, coming at it from all points of the compass.

The busiest part of the LSWR main line.

Leeds to Manchester via Bradford Interchange and Halifax. Other lines, such as the Oldham Loop, will also be included.

I've visited the north of Ireland several times, so here's a selection of the photos I took there.

Once a through route, Aldershot to Alton is served by South West Trains, while the line beyond - to Winchester - was closed by BR. Part of it is now the private Mid Hants Railway. Some pre-preservation photos are included.

Most of the railways in this area have long gone, but some traces remain and there are a couple of preservation sites.

Birmingham, the Black Country and beyond, right down to Stratford-upon-Avon. Also included is the Midland Metro tram system.

Two narrow gauge lines terminate in Llanberis, the Snowdon Mountain Railway & the Llanberis Lake Railway.

Preston to Colne, plus the Clitheroe line.

The line through Horsham to the coast, plus the Brighton-Havant line and branches. The Chalk Pits Museum at Amberley is also included.

Former LB&SCR lines which are now part of London's suburban network.

Railways north of the Tyne, to the Scottish border, plus the Newcastle-Carlisle line.

Everything in the county, between Tyne and Tees, except the Bishop Auckland line, which has its own collection.

Glasgow Central and Queen Street, plus a few trams. Also includes the Subway.

Pictures from this famous museum, at Crich, Derbyshire, some dating back to the early 1970s.

Now a preserved line, recently reconnected to the national network.

The centre of the Midland Railway empire.

One of two routes between these locations, serving Rotherham Central and Mexborough. The Doncaster Avoiding Line, opened by the GCR in 1910, is also included here.

A county that has lost a lot of railways, particularly in the east.

The wonderful railed transport of this lovely island.

The South Yorkshire Joint Line, the Hull & Barnsley and Great Central Joint & the HB, GC & MR Joint.Also included is the eastern end of the Dearne Valley Railway, owned by the L&YR. Just the SYJR remains open, for freight only.

Lots of photos to come of one of Britain's busiest lines. Includes the Windermere branch and other short lines, plus the narrow gauge West Lancashire Railway.

Certainly a member of the Premier League of preserved UK railways, running from Bury to Heywood & Rawtenstall.

From Carnforth on the WCML, through Barrow-in-Furness, Whitehaven & Workington, to Carlisle, back on the WCML. Also included are the Lakeside & Haverthwaite and Ravenglass & Eskdale lines, plus the remains of the CK&P.

Never a dull moment at this Cumbrian crossroads. It's always worth hanging around for an hour to see what turns up.

Devon and Cornwall have seen various narrow gauge lines over the years, mainly tourist operations. Some will be featured here.

Better known locally as "The Plant", the former GNR loco works.

A former Midland Railway cross-country route, still busy today. A good area to find mechanical signalling. Includes the Rutland Railway Museum at Cottesmore.

One of Britain's premier preserved lines, which I have known since the 1960s.

Still an important railway location. We also look at the line towards Royston.

The line from York to Scarborough, plus the railed transport in Scarborough itself (the miniature railway & the cliff lifts).

The operational railway in York, including the station, yards, loco sheds & the Foss Islands Branch to the DVLR.

Visited in June 2006. There will also be some pictures from a short visit in 2003.

Crewe/Chester to Newport, via Shrewsbury, Hereford & Abergavenny.

Industrial railways, mainly NCB, between the Tees & the Scottish border.

Newcastle's own suburban rail system.

The historic tramway on the Fylde coast, running from Starr Gate to Fleetwood.

The LSWR routes from Clapham Junction to Windsor & Reading, including such delights as the Hounslow Loop.
